Institute of Pollution Control Theory and Technology

Environmental functional materials are major components in environment protection, which play a key role in environmental purification, control and remediation. Development of novel functional materials for environmental protection is help for establishment of key technical systems for practical application, achieving combination of technical process and social requirement. Following the structural transformation of the economy and technical upgradation, it is necessary and pressing to develop functional materials for environmental protection. The research team mainly focuses on various functional materials for water pollution control, environmental remediation, having developed a series of functional materials for water and air pollution treatment and control, soil remediation, as well as the corresponding equipment and technology. The aim is to establish complete theory and technology systems from materials and equipment to engineering practice. The major research fields are listed as follows.

1. A series of materials for adsorption, filtration, ion exchange, advanced oxidation, catalysis, bio-carrier, etc, have been developed so as to control water, air, soil pollution. To obtain economic and technologic feasible technologies, which allow for efficient control and treatment of environmental pollution, as well as waste reclamation, creation has been made in combination of existing experiences and technical requirements. The relevant contents include the following topics: preparation of high-performance adsorbent/ion exchange materials, and study on their working mechanisms and application; modification of environmentally friendly bio-carrier materials, and application of such bio-carriers in equipment; development of stable, stable oxidant compounds and advanced oxidation processes; development of metal catalyst and design of corresponding catalytic oxidation equipment; development of key functional materials and equipment to meet the demands for heavy metal removal, sludge reduction and waste reclamation.

2. Targeting the pollutant source and transport pathway, technologies and equipment for source treatment have been developed through physical adsorption, ion exchange, (electro)chemical oxidation, biological degradation, bioelectrochemical methods in combination of special equipment so as to source treatment and waste reclamation. The relevant contents include the following topics: (1) development of equipment for advanced nitrogen removal by coupling modified zeolite adsorption and biological regeneration; development of high-density biofilm filtration system based on PP suspended filters and technologies for gray water reclamation; development of technology for heavy metal wastewater treatment based on Fe-C/Fe-O/CSE materials loaded equipment and sludge reduction; development of BB catalyst induced oxidation system for decoloration,COD removal and sludge reduction from industrial wastewater.

3. Based on environmental functional materials, pollution control technologies as well equipment as mentioned above, pollution control technologies are to be applied in engineering practices to meet the technical requirements in water pollution control and soil remediation. Especially in heavy polluted industries, such as iron, printing and dyeing, medicine, electroplating, technical bottle necks should be broken by establishing design and management standards.
